Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 2 cups aged sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh herbs (optional), such as parsley or thyme

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper and adding cheese.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until warmed.
  4. Pour the sauce over the layered potatoes and top with remaining cheese.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil for the last 15 minutes to achieve a bubbly crust.
  6. Let it cool slightly before serving.
